What Your Body is Saying to You When You Live in Fear!

We are about to enter into the season of goblins, ghouls, and ghosts! But that is all for the fun and love of Halloween.  Fear and fright should not be a regular occurring thing in your life!

Did you know fear can impact your body in a physical way?

Yes, it’s emotional, but the way your body physically reacts can cause any (or all) of the following symptoms!

7 Ways Fear Affects Your Body:

  • Heartburn – Your body can produce excess stomach acid which can then cause heartburn or acid reflux, which is always linked to emotional issues. Identify and address the underlying issue and this symptom is dealt with too.
  • Rashes – Address the underlying fear and you address the rash
  • Exhaustion – Fear is stealing your energy.
  • Cold Hands – Fear causes the fight or flight response in your body which may cause your hands and/or feet to go cold or sweaty. Recognizing the cause may help alleviate the symptom.
  • Loss of Sleep – When your body perceives a threat it releases stress hormones (fight or flight response) making it difficult to fall asleep.
  • Cloudy Thinking – Feeling overwhelmed or lacking in sleep from fear may cause cloudy thinking.
  • Self-Medicating – It may feel easier to medicate (alcohol, drugs, etc) or hide the symptoms rather than face the fear and what’s causing them.

The Benefits of laughter

Studies have been showing that nearly 7 in 10 employees are feeling the stress and impact the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been having on their personal and professional lives. This has aligned with stark increases in new prescriptions of antidepressants, antianxiety, and anti-insomnia medications.

Prior to the pandemic, the use of antianxiety and anti-insomnia medications were both on the decline from 2015 to 2019, down 12% and 11.3%, respectively. In the time frame examined in the study, new prescriptions for antianxiety medications exhibited a 37.7% increase, stressing the vital need for therapeutic intervention.

So what can we do to reduce the stress levels that have substantially increased these last 4 months?

Hormones

Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine (adrenaline), dopamine, and growth hormone. It also increases the level of health-enhancing hormones, like endorphins. Laughter increases the number of antibody-producing cells we have working for us and enhances the effectiveness of T cells. All this means a stronger immune system, as well as fewer physical effects of stress.

Physical release

Have you ever felt like you have to laugh or you'll cry? Have you experienced that cleansed feeling after a good laugh? Laughter provides a physical and emotional release.

Internal workout

A good belly laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abs, and even works out the shoulders, leaving muscles more relaxed afterward. It even provides a good workout for the heart.

Distraction

Laughter brings the focus away from anger, guilt, stress, and negative emotions in a more beneficial way than other mere distractions.

Perspective:

Studies show that our response to stressful events can be altered by whether we view something as a threat or a challenge. Humor can give us a more lighthearted perspective and help us view events as challenges, thereby making them less threatening and more positive.

Social benefits

Laughter connects us with others. Just as with smiling and kindness, most people find that laughter is contagious. So, if you bring more laughter into your life, you can most likely help others around you to laugh more and realize these benefits as well. By elevating the mood of those around you, you can reduce their stress levels and perhaps improve the quality of social interaction you experience with them, reducing your stress level even more!

Welcome back to another week in wellness with Purely Simple Organic Living! There is often a lot of confusion around hormonal imbalances and how they may present in the body. So today we are going to talk about hormone imbalances, their effects on your health, and how they relate to autoimmunity.

The Endocrine System and Hormones

Your hormones are produced and regulated by the endocrine system in the body. The endocrine system is made up of a collection of glands, with the major ones being the thyroid gland, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, and certain cells in the pancreas, among others. The endocrine system is highly reactive and works to regulate your hormones and respond to certain triggers–think of it as you body’s defense mechanism! For example, when you feel fear your adrenals flood your body with adrenaline to support that “fight or flight” response. Your pancreas secretes insulin to regulate blood sugar to prevent you from passing out or going into a diabetic coma.

Hormone imbalances occur when there is either too much or too little of a hormone chemical in the bloodstream. There is a delicate balance when it comes to hormones in the body, and even the slightest imbalance can negatively impact your health over time1.

Some symptoms of hormone imbalance in women are:

  • Low energy, dragging through the afternoon, feeling sluggish
  • Mood swings, depression, anxiety, irritability, weepiness
  • Painful, heavy, or irregular periods
  • Breast tenderness
  • Bloating
  • Acne, rashes, dry skin
  • Weight gain
  • Low libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Infertility or miscarriage
  • Ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Hair loss or excess body hair
  • Muscle aches, joint pain
  • Estrogen dominance

Many internal and external factors can disrupt your normal hormone levels.

From your age, to the medications you are on, to your stress levels, to underlying medical conditions, to even the laundry detergent and dryer sheets you use…your endocrine system can be disrupted and struggle to find a balance with its hormone secretions! Plastics and laundry soaps often leech out xenoestrogens–chemical compounds that mimic the hormone estrogen–and can bind to your body’s hormone receptor sites causing hormone imbalances and other health problems. Decreasing your toxin load is vital when trying to maintain a healthy hormone balance!

Hormones and Autoimmunity

There are two autoimmune conditions that affect the thyroid gland and either cause overactive thyroid, Graves’ disease, or an underactive thyroid, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis2. This occurs when your immune system attacks the cells in your thyroid, either causing your thyroid to secrete more hormones or destroying and damaging thyroid cells so that they do not secrete hormones. Your thyroid hormones regulate your body’s metabolism, and an under-or-over active thyroid can affect your weight, sleep, anxiety levels, mood, libido, etc.
