What is the Immune System?
The immune system is the body’s natural defense against foreign invaders like bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. It works by targeting these pathogens and releasing specific antibodies to destroy infected cells.
The immune system consists of two parts, innate and adaptive. The innate immune system is the primitive, evolutionary immune response that is your body’s first line of defense when your body is invaded by a pathogen. The innate immune response triggers a nonspecific response within the first couple of hours that a pathogen invades the body.
The adaptive immune system, otherwise known as “acquired immunity”, is more sophisticated and specific than the innate immune system. The adaptive immune system is made up of B cells and T cells in the body, and develops and adapts over time to differentiate between what is “you” and what is a foreign invader! Both systems work to identify, target, and destroy pathogens in the body through a series of steps called the immune response.
Why do we specialize in autoimmune disease?
Reports from the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) show that 50 million Americans have an autoimmune disorder, and the number is rising! This population is often over-prescribed and susceptible to co-infections that further contribute to symptoms and imbalances in the body.
Many autoimmune diseases go undiagnosed as their symptoms are not always straight-forward and Western Medicine tends to look at a group of symptoms with the concept of providing a drug to shut the symptoms down. This does not allow them to address the root cause of the symptoms to bring the body back into balance and oftentimes these drugs throw your body into even further imbalance!
Think of it this way: you are standing on a nail and taking a bunch of aspirin to relieve the pain…wouldn’t it make more sense to address the actual problem and remove your foot off the nail? That’s where we come in!
What Classifies an Autoimmune Disease?
An autoimmune disease is when your body’s natural defense system malfunctions and begins attacking normal tissue and organ cells. This concept is called molecular mimicry.
Western medicine accepts that this is a problem at face value, but they often don’t investigate which cells are mimicking, and why. Even if they did, they don’t have the solution to fix it!
There are over 100 different types of autoimmune diseases, some common diagnoses are:
- Alopecia Areata
- Celiac Disease
- Crohn’s Disease
- Graves’ Disease
- Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Psoriatic Arthritis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Sjögren's Syndrome
- Type I Diabetes
- Ulcerative Colitis
- …and more
Therefore we support the body, mind, and spirit of our clients to help them conquer autoimmune disease naturally! Using well supported holistic care processes, we provide a roadmap to get to the root of the inflammation in your body by addressing all contributing factors like stress, infection, food allergies, toxins, genetics, emotions, leaky gut, etc.
We understand that your body is a system! Western medicine, on the other hand, is trained to divide your body into sections based on specialty. Often this means that multiple specialists provide multiple medications to address each symptom individually without looking at the underlying root cause, which can only be seen by looking at your body as a whole!
As a complementary alternative health practice, we believe that Western medicine does have a place in our society. In fact, 40% of our clients are Western medicine professionals! They are excellent and necessary in medical situations such a trauma, transplants and other forms of similar care…but often fall short on supporting those with chronic disease.
We see symptoms as a sign from your body saying, “Hey, I’m out of balance!”. Our aim is to uncover the root cause of these symptoms by addressing the virus/bacteria component as well as the emotional component to help YOU on your wellness journey!
